getting more specific

I've been fortunate enough to have a steady job on the side of my photography work. This allows me to be more discerning when I take photo work. I'm able to do work that I want to do, such as shoot William Elliott Whitmore in Flat Black Studios on my own dime.

William Elliott Whitmore at Flat Black Studios

I'm to the point now that I need to specialize my work. I could be "freelance" like most of the other shooters around me, but I don't want to be "pretty good" at a lot of stuff, and not amazing at anything. Sometimes you hafta sacrifice the good for the best.

So...narrowing down my work. Adventure, portraits, kids, weddings, advertising, editorial, landscape, architecture, all of which I've done a little of.

I'll let you know as soon as I figure it out. In the meantime, let me know what you've like the best out of my shots. That may help me make some decisions.

Thanks.

I feel the same as you. So much to learn... what do I hone in on first... where to start since it all seems important. My answer to you... and I should say this to myself, the answer lies in what you love to do {or take pic's of} the most? I love taking artful photos. I love doing landscape and stills. I have just ventured out into people photos... it is tough work but I'm doing it b/c the challenge is thrilling. I like photographing people, I'm learning to love it. I think you do amazing work and that you are great at capturing moments whether they are staged or stumbled upon... you show moments of truth. I hope that insight helps. I don't think you have to limit yourself now... I think you should keep testing the waters! Cheers~Ivy

I think I've enjoyed your portraiture and landscape photography the most, but I know just about everyone you're photographing, so that probably is an important bias to consider. :)

I'm going to have to go with Ivy on this one, and say the type of photography you are passionate about and I don't know if you have to focus too quick. If I were to guess, I'd say it has something to do with photographing people. I like you eye for portraits. Fine a niche in there somewhere and brand yourself with that style. I have some other thoughts on this that we can discuss over a beer sometime here. Keep going, your work is great!
